Razi Mohebi

Born in Ganzi on the first of January 1971, Razi Mohebi is an Afghan-Italian Filmmaker. During civile war, he escaped to Pakistan and lived in Kowaita as a refugee until he arrived in Iran, where he enrolled in a Koranic school to get a chance to study. Afterwards, thanks to his painting skills, he was accepted at the University of Cinema in Tehran.

In Iran he met Soheila Javaheri, collaborating to initiatives meant to give support and an education to Afghani clandestine children.

After the fall of the Taliban regime, in 2001, he went back to Afghanistan where he took part in the foundation of “Kabul Film” and he acted in the movie At Five in the Afternoon, Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003. During this period he also Assistant director of the movie Osama, directed by Sidiq Barmak .The director, however, did not want to give up his activity and so he founded Razi Film House, for which he directed documentaries and short movies such as Kite, condemned by the Taliban and selected at the Locarno and Berlin Film Festivals.

In the summer of 2007, during the making of a documentary about the killing of three female journalists, he was invited in Italy as a guest at the Religion Today Film Festival.

During those days Razi Film House was shut down and going back to Afghanistan turned out to be too dangerous. Actually he lives with his family in Trento.
